Dante’s Puddle Jumpers Charity Car Wash: A valued tradition at Waterdown Collision
The sixth annual fundraising event known as Dante’s Puddle Jumpers Charity Car Wash is set to take place on Saturday, May 13th, 2017. The fundraiser is in support of cystic fibrosis research, a cause that hits close to home for the DiFelice family, owners and operators of Waterdown Collision.
14-year-old Dante DiFelice lives with cystic fibrosis (CF) and is an active supporter of Cystic Fibrosis Canada. By donating $20, supporters get an interior and exterior car clean as well as a barbeque lunch.
This seemingly humble event attracts big attention in Waterdown. Last year we washed well over 462 cars and raised over $24,290 with the help of over 155 volunteers. So far Dante’s event has raised over $160,000 for Cystic Fibrosis Canada.
Expecting a massive turnout in 2017, the police will be directing traffic to ensure that safety on the road and traffic concerns are under control.
Although Cystic fibrosis is one of the most common fatal genetic diseases affecting Canadian children, many people do not know about the cause and symptoms that can be associated with the disease.
The cause of Cystic Fibrosis – it is a genetic disease occurring when a child inherits two abnormal genes, one from each parent. When two parents are both carriers, there is a 25 percent chance that the child will be born with the disease and there is a 50 percent chance the child will carry the abnormal gene.
Some of the most prevalent symptoms include:
- Persistent cough with productive thick mucous
- Wheezing and shortness of breath
- Frequent chest infections, which may include pneumonia
- Bowel disturbances
- Weight loss or failure to gain weight despite possible increased appetite
Dante DiFelice is an extremely active child, despite his diagnosis. He plays rep hockey as well as soccer, flag football and cross-country. However, due to some of Dante’s symptoms, he is about 10 – 15 pounds underweight because of malnourishment associated with the disease, and breathing can be extremely difficult and restricted, especially if he has any cold or flu symptoms.
Support Dante and his family by attending the charity car wash at Waterdown Collision this spring.
